Mulch Installation Calculator
Estimate mulch material quantity, labor, delivery/setup, overhead, minimum fee, and profit before quoting a mulch job.
Formula
Bed area equals length times width. Total area equals bed area times number of beds. Depth in feet equals mulch depth inches divided by 12. Cubic yards equals cubic feet divided by 27, then waste/extra percentage is added. Direct cost includes material cost, labor, delivery/travel, equipment/supplies, and overhead.
Example calculation
Two 40 by 6 foot beds at 3 inches deep need about 4.89 cubic yards after 10% extra. At $45 per yard, four labor hours at $55/hour, $40 delivery, $15 supplies, $30 overhead, and a 30% target margin, the planning quote is about $750.
Common mulch pricing mistakes
Common mistakes include measuring only one bed, forgetting depth conversion, skipping waste allowance, not charging delivery, and ignoring cleanup or edging time.
